  8.     There is a time in every young reader's life when the works of
  9. D.H. Lawrence strike with the force of revelation. His novels can
  10. leave you transformed (at least temporarily) by his visionary
  11. social criticism and his earnest reflections on the endless
  12. struggle for a transfiguring sexuality. Ken Russell's adaptation
  13. of The Rainbow is faithful not only to Lawrence's spirit but also
  14. to the naive idealism he was (one hopes still is) capable of
  15. animating in eager, youthful hearts.

  17.     The Rainbow is a coming-of-age story set in turn-of-the-century
  18. Britain, when the modern world was also coming of age. In its first
  19. sequence, little Ursula Brangwen (who will grow up to be played by
  20. an intense Sammi Davis) races dangerously close to the water,
  21. reaching out for the title symbol. As she leaves home in the final
  22. sequence, another rainbow arches above her, beckoning her onward.
  23. In between, she experiments with lesbian and heterosexual lovers
  24. (Amanda Donohoe and Paul McGann, respectively), endures a bleak
  25. passage as a teacher in a working-class school and witnesses the
  26. end of an Edenesque England. All these experiences test her, stir
  27. her questing spirit and lead her finally to feminist independence,
  28. which was never more attractively stated than it was in these
  29. early, innocent days.

  31.     Certainly the challenge of recapturing that spirit on film
  32. seems to have tranquilized Russell. His imagery is more confident,
  33. less feverish, but no less potent than it has been in years.
  34. Perhaps that is because it is once again enlisted in the service
  35. of a story worth telling, ideas worth thinking about and a life
  36. worth caring about.
